Vienna in the Fall

When the weather starts getting cooler, the air crisp, and the leaves start changing colors then you know that it’s time to say goodbye to summer and hello to the golden hues of Fall. In Vienna it also means a change in activities around the city – but it doesn’t mean that the fun slows down! Here are some things that you can do in the city from the late weeks of September until November.

Beisls in Vienna

In Paris there is the bistrot, Italy has the trattoria and in Vienna they have the “beisl.” Beisls (from the Yiddish word “bajiss”), or bistros are casual dining places that serve local specialities. Similar to its counterparts, the traditional Viennese beisl has that down-to-earth, easygoing atmosphere, outdoor tables when the weather is good and where local comfort food dominates the menu.

Museum of Art Fakes

Are you into mysteries and true crime stories in the art world? Have you ever wondered how the greatest art forgers have been able to fool even the most renowned art experts? If you’re in the 3rd district of Vienna and have seen enough art works from the dozens of museums in the city, then head to the Flaschermuseum (“Museum of Art Fakes”) for a unique twist on the usual gallery exhibition.

Madame Tussauds Vienna

Who hasn’t heard of the world-famous waxworks museum Madam Tussauds? Since it first opened its doors in the 19th century in London, it has grown to become one of the best tourist attraction franchises with branches in major cities in the United States, Asia and Europe. And in 2011, Vienna joined as one of the newest venues for such amazing lifelike wax figures. What’s good about Madame Tussauds Vienna is that aside from displaying wax figures of international personalities, it also reflects the city’s cultural heritage.

Vienna Classic Days 2012

Vintage car enthusiasts and collectors unite! On September 8th to 9th, the capital city of Austria lends some of its main thoroughfares and amazing venues to the “Vienna Classic Days.” It is an annual automotive event that attracts participants, exhibitors and visitors from all over the world.

Ferienspiel 2012

Summer is the time for kids to have fun and enjoy outdoor activities with other children. This is why for the past 40 years, Vienna has been hosting the “Ferienspiel” or “Holiday Games” – the largest holiday programme in Europe designed for children to participate in various entertaining and at the same time education activities in the city. When it first started in 1972, the summer event attracted over 15,000 children between six and thirteen years.

Museum for Contraception and Abortion

Trust the Viennese people to tackle issues that most countries would find too sensitive and controversial to deal with. In the capital city of Austria visitors will find museums for the bizarre, the unique and the most curious things – one of them deals with contraception and abortion. Yes, there is a museum that tackles the taboo subjects head-on by displaying the many (and oftentimes quirky) contraceptive methods and devices used throughout history.

Global Champions Tour 2012

Fans and followers of horse riding and show jumping will have to plan a trip to Vienna in September. The capital city of Austria will be hosting the 11th round of the Global Champions Tour 2012, the first time for Vienna to be included in the prestigious international show jumping competition series.

The Essl Museum

If contemporary Austrian and European art is what you’re looking for, then head out to the Essl Museum in Klosterneuburg, just on the outskirts of Vienna. The museum came about from the art collections of Karlheinz and Agnes Essl who have travelled extensively and visited many art galleries in their passion for and pursuit of fine art.

Alte Donau

If you’re in Vienna and looking for that perfectly easy and short getaway from the city’s hustle and bustle, set your sights (and the GPS in your car) to Alte Donau . The “Old Danube” (which is the English translation of its name) is a landlocked body of water separated from the Danube River by a dam and is a favorite leisure area among the locals. It spans about 1.6 square kilometers divided into two sections by the Kagraner Brucke: the Obere Alte Donau to the northwest, and the Untere Alte Donau to the southeast.
