Vienna Study Finds Men and Women React Differently When Stressed

Scientists in Vienna have found that men, in general, tend to be not very sensitive to women particularly during an argument. This finding confirms women’s common complaint that men do not really care at all when they argue with the females including their wives.

The Vienna study specifically revealed that while women are sensitive most of the time, men have the habit of cutting off their emotions and become egocentric. The finding published in the Psychoneuroloendrocrinology journal was a result of a comparative study on the reaction of males and females when exposed to stressful situations. These situations include taking exams, dealing with relationship problems and watching terrifying movies.

According to psychologists from the Social Cognitive Neuroscience Department at the University of Vienna, men and women react differently when stressed. Women who experience anxiety are more sensitive and emphatic. They were also found to be more observant to the body language and signals they see around them.

The Viennese researchers explained that owing to their sensitivity, women are normally capable of reading the reactions of people around them. Most often, they would turn to friends to help them cope with the stress they’re experiencing. This only means that women have better social interaction skills when under stress as they improve their interaction with other people. The scientists concluded that when facing a tough situation, the females do well in applying their social skills.

Men, on the other hand, showed an opposite attitude. When stressed, they were found to become self-absorbed and more focused on themselves. In short, they tend to cut off their emotions and instead turned inwards. What this means is that they lack the social skills when facing a challenging situation.

The Vienna study covered 40 men and 40 women all of whom were tasked to do certain things such as giving a public presentation and solving mathematical problems.
