Vienna Ball Season Starting

One of the famous events in Vienna that is most anticipated by people there is the ball season. So if you’re the type of person who loves to dance the waltz, foxtrot and jive, you will surely have a great ballroom experience in this Austrian capital. The Viennese Waltz originated from this city, remember?

Vienna Ball

Traditionally, the Vienna Ball season starts December 31 and runs until February 16, 2010. During this period, men and women are dressed in their finest as they get on the dance floors. There are actually different balls that take place with the Opernball or Opera Ball as the most popular, elegant and expensive one. This ball will be held on February 11 at the Staatsoper (Vienna State Opera) and is expected to be graced by celebrities and the royal families. Vienna’s Opera Ball has been held since 1877 and has gained international attention because of its long tradition. Among the celebrities that have graced the event include Sophia Lauren, Grace Jones, Pamela Anderson and Heather Locklear.

The yearly Vienna ball season usually starts with the Kaiserball or Imperial Ball on December 31 at the Hofburg palace and is meant to welcome the New Year. This is followed by the Ball der Pharmazie or Pharmacist’s ball on January 16 also at the Hofburg, the Vienna Philharmonic ball (Wiener Philharmoniker)on January 21 at the Musikverein and the Juristenball or the Lawyer’s ball on February 13 still at the Hofburg.

Other famous balls in Vienna are the Blumenball held at the city hall and known for its beautiful flower arrangements, the Zuckerbäckerball at the Austria Center Vienna and the Kaffeesiederball which features the fantastic performances of the state opera ballet, the opera ball orchestra and the traditional dancing school Elmayer. Unknown to many, the Kaffeesiederball highlights the well known and favorite beverage of Austrians which is the coffee.
